The Forgotten Story of Kirateshwar Mahadev Temple, Sikkim

At the Legship of West Bengal - India, Along the banks of River Rangeet lies an ancient Temple which carries a holy mythological Hindu legend. This temple is identified as a pilgrimage site. The temple is called Kirateshwar Mahadev Temple, Also known as Kirateshwar Thaan amongst the local Kirati People or Simply Known as Shiv Mandir. A small bridge leads the pilgrims to the congregation of temples situated on the far banks of the River Rangeet.

Kirateshwar Temple holds many mythological stories and divine events passed on straight down from the era of Mahabharata. The Legend Says that, According to Hindu beliefs, Lord Shiva was pleased with Arjuna's hard penance and devotion and appeared before him in the very site where the temple lies today. Lord Shiva Appeared as a hunter named Kirateshwar and challenged Arjuna for a battle, The Dispute being as who shot the boar first. Arjuna was unknown about the real identity of Lord Shiva and misunderstood him as some ordinary hunter. They both ended up in a fierce battle of archery shooting bows at each other. Soon Lord Shiva Appeared in his real form and blessed Arjuna with success in the Mahabharata War. A long time ago as the people miraculously found a stone manifesting in the form of Shiva Ling they built the temple over it. The said Shiv Ling is the main effigy of worship in the temple.



The belief of many that a mere visit with true devotion to this temple fulfills one's wishes particularly a wish for son or daughter and also wishes for peace harmony and good health

The construction of the temple has that the story of its origin got lost in the course of time. There are separate temples for the various deities such as  Lord Rama and Goddess Durga where devotees can give their offerings. The festival of the Bala Chaturdashi, which is observed in November–December every year, and Maha Shivratri which falls in the month of February or March every year are the main attraction of the temple.
